2008 Triennial School Census

Thank you for taking part in the Charlottesville City Schools 2008 Triennial Census.  All public schools in Virginia conduct this census as required by Section 22.1-281 of the Code of Virginia.  Please be assured that the information which you provide will NOT be used for any other purpose but the census.  Only a summary count (no names or addresses) from this census will be sent to the Commonwealth of Virginia.  This count will determine the annual distribution of approximately 1.1 billion of sales tax dollars back to localities to support public education.  Therefore, it is important to all Charlottesville residents that an accurate census is made so that Charlottesville receives its fair share of these monies.

According to Virginia State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Dr. Billy K. Cannaday:  “It is important for all families with school-age children to respond to the census, even if their children attend private or parochial schools or are home-schooled.  If a school division receives less than its fair share of sales tax revenue, then the locality has to draw more deeply from resources that otherwise could be used to support other services.”  A video of Dr. Cannaday commenting on the 2008 triennial school census may be viewed here.

In order to be counted in the census, children must be between 5 and 19 years of age on December 31, 2008 and residing in Charlottesville.
